DIY Coax

edited April 2017 in DIY
The inDIY '18 competition categories got me thinking CHEAP. I heard Ani's art nouveau entry(great speaker) and decided to use the miniscule tweeter in a coax. Low n' behold, TB13-1761s and Peerless TC10FG00-04 were merged. Got a FR(22uF cap for the tweeter) and some speaker porn pics.

  • Well, well done!
  • Awesome. I have been meaning to do something like that, but sloth is my identifying trait methinks.

    I have a signature.
  • Nice, and that tc10 has high sensitivity and power handling to boot. WTG Kenny. I am also going to try this out.... Have the parts on the way
  • Glad to serve.

  • This looks great, hope I get to hear it!

  • Oh, one critique.......Mother to solder leads on the TB.........cooked the trace.

  • Finally put a second coax together, surprised at the FR.

Next I got to audition them.

  • Is that with any sort of crossover on them? They only need a notch at like 400ish and 8k-10k and they'll be nice and flat.

  • Just have a 22ohm cap on the tweeter.

  • wow, nice one....!!! way to go with el cheapo drivers...! is that a 22mH cap?
  • oops :3

  • If it is a cap it would be in farads, and 22uF seems large.
  • you are right, i got it wrong too!

I used a 4.7 uF but i was crossing at 7khz. that tweeter should not be crossed lower than 4.5 - 5k, 7-8k is better

Just had it on for protection, same cap as in the first post.. I was looking for a general FR.

  • Oh wow, ok, so that's pretty flat with essentially no crossover!

  • Decided to use this for Iowa(if it works). The coax will be sealed in 0.62L on top of the DS115(same woofer in the itty-bitty) in 3-6L. This will get on a plane.  :3

  • You said no more designer series... lol

Well, it worked in the itty-bitty. Just not too many small woofs that would work. Hmmmmm, I should look a little harder.  ;)

Just did some quick sims with some 4"ers and the DS looks best. I'm stuck with it.
Now if you have any suggestions...........

  • Try the Tectonic Elements TEBM65C20F for $14

John H, btw forum has decided I don't get emails
  • Thanks John, but the DS114 has more efficiency, lower fs, low VAS and I used it before with success.

  • hopefully not too late, but you could use this website to make a cone shape that will make the transition from cone to tweeter housing a bit better, make smooth out some of the FR, too?

  • The tweeter is 6mm proud. I plan on using an o-ring to fill the gap and hope it will help with wave integration.

  • Finally finished the box.

  • Excellent.  Look forward to hearing these in Indy next year
  • Actually, these are for IOWA. Plan on a larger woofer for INDIY.(as per the rules)

  • Oh that's so cool I'm excited to see some squigglies

  • Would you be performing another "Operation" on these for Indi?

I will make a "fresh" pair for indiy with larger woofers. Volume was the issue in the last pair.

  • Larger woofer that is NOT a Designer series?
